For centuries, a potter's wheel was used in India to make clay pots called Matkas, which kept drinking water cool. Surprisingly, in many Indian households, traditional Matkas are still used today, despite refrigerators and electricity.
In India, tea is one of the most commonly served drinks in all households, and Cutting Chai or half a cup of tea is easily available at Tapris (snack stalls) by the roadside. An exception is South India, where there is more of a coffee culture.
Indians love cool drinks and cooling foods in hot weather and enjoy warming drinks in winter. Classic Indian refreshments (besides water) are fresh coconut water (especially in the western and southern coastal regions) or Sharbat, a sweet cold drink made from fruits and flower petals. Also, Nimbu Pani (lime juice with water, salt or sugar), a traditional and the most common Indian drink, is very popular.
Lassi is one of the most popular drinks on all Indian restaurant menus worldwide. This drink is made from whipped yogurt and is sweetened, salted, or mixed with fruits. The salted version is especially drunk in rural areas of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
As an aperitif, spicy drinks such as Jal-Jeera are served and a cool Kokum Sharbat is offered to welcome guests and is indispensable at weddings. Most often, Indians drink a glass of water or Chaas with their meals, a buttermilk made from yogurt, diluted with water and seasoned with salt and crushed cumin.
In the winter months, a saffron-infused milkshake called Zafran Sharbat is popular in Kashmir and although it is a cold drink, the spice tastes wintry and warming.
The drink recipes you find here are appetizing, refresh the palate, fill small meal breaks or serve as thirst quenchers.
